Abstract:
The aim of this paper was to figure out the relationship between migration and the food consumption of household in poor rural areas of China. Household survey was conducted in six poor counties: Zhen′an, Luonan in Shaanxi province, Wuding, Huize in Yunnan province, and Pan, and Zheng′an in Guizhou province in 2015. Survey data of randomly selected 1368 households was used for the analysis. Propensity Score Matching was used in order to reduce the endogeneity bias of sample selection. The results indicated that by using k nearest neighbor matching, radius matching and kernel matching methods, the migration significantly improved total food expenditures per capita by 0.060% to 0.081%. Migration affected food consumption mainly by income changes, external information/experience, and population changes. Migration in poverty stricken areas of west China significantly improved the food consumption of households. It′s necessary to pay attention to the status of food consumption and nutrition in poor areas, take measures to improve their food consumption structure, and raise the level of food security and nutrition.
