Abstract: |
In the context of comprehensively promoting rural revitalization and facilitating common prosperity for farmers and rural areas, it is of great significance to study the impact and mechanism of land transfer on farmers' income. Utilizing the database of the National Important Agricultural Resources account, this study selected 550 households in Gansu province as sample data. And the least squares method was employed to explore the influence of land transfer on farmers' income and its various components. Additionally, the mediating effect model and Sobel test were further applied to analyze how land transfer impacts farmers' incomes. The results revealed that: (1) Land transfer had a positive effect on farmers' income. Participating in land transfer led to a 22.7% increase in farmers' total income, with farming income increasing by 29.4%. However, there was no significant impact on off-farm work income resulting from land transfer. (2) Different types of land transfer had different impacts on farmers' income. Land transfer-out had no significant impact on farmers' total income, but reduced the income from farming by 37.1% and increased the income from off-farm work by 22%. Land transfer-in increased farmers' total income by 32.9%, with the income from farming increased by 49.2%; although its impact on off-farm work income was negative, but not statistically significant, it generally realized an income-increasing effect on farmers' total income. The income effects varied with the scale of the transfers-in, with a higher average income for large-scale transferee households. (3) Land transfer had varying impacts on different farmers' income. Farmers with higher education levels experienced greater improvements in both their total household and farming incomes due to land transfers. For those who were heavily reliant on agriculture, land transfer had a significant positive influence on their overall household and farming incomes as well. Conversely, for farmers with low dependence on agriculture, there was no statistically significant impact observed regarding their total household or farming incomes. (4) The fixed investment in agriculture production played a partially mediating role in promoting farmers' income growth through land transfer. Approximately 14.10% of the impact of land transfer on farmers' total income was realized through the mediating role of the fixed investment in agriculture production. In summary, land transfer has the potential to increase farmers' income, and the fixed investment in agriculture production plays an intermediary role in this process. Therefore, it is imperative to expedite the establishment of a robust land transfer market and encourage farmers to participate in land transfer. At the same time, relevant policy support should be provided to encourage farmers to enhance their fixed investment in agriculture production and further augment their income. |
